On June 9, Minister-President Jan Jambon received a senior political delegation from Iraqi Kurdistan. The delegation was led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and also included the Kurdish Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Mr. Safeen Muhsin Dizayee) and Planning (Mr. Dara Rashid Mahmud).
During the meeting, the political and security situation in Kurdistan, Iraq and the wider region was discussed. However, the focus of the conversation was on the possibilities of strengthening economic cooperation between Flanders and Iraqi Kurdistan. The government of Iraqi Kurdistan (KRG) mainly wants to focus on the economic development of the country. The government sees that as the best recipe to ensure the stability, security and political future of the country. Prime Minister Barzani has asked the Government of Flanders to set up cooperation that can support this economic development. Minister-President Jambon has promised to continue the existing cooperation and to look for opportunities to increase economic cooperation.
Minister-President Jambon also expressly thanked the Kurdish government for all its efforts in the fight against IS. He stressed that Europe – that has also suffered severely from terrorist attacks by IS – has been greatly helped by the effective struggle of the Kurdish Peshmergas.
