Sunday, May the 3rd Minister-president Geert Bourgeois attended the memorial at Dachau. On 29 April it was 70 years ago that the concentration camp was liberated. Camp survivors, their families and students of the Atheneum of Veurne and of St. Ghislain accompanied Minister-president Bourgeois at the memorial ceremony.
The Dachau concentration camp was the first major concentration camp of Nazi Germany, and was one of the last camps to be liberated by American soldiers on April the 29th 1945. Dachau is primarily known as a concentration camp for political prisoners. Also, many from Flanders died in this horrible camp.
In her speech, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against intolerance and anti-Semitism and stressed that such horrors should never be forgotten. A message Minister-president Bourgeois, in his conversations with the students, endorsed.
