Project: Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) in Malawi
Beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) supervised by the World Bank
Duration: 2017 - 2022
Budget: 5.500,000 euros
In its policy paper, Flanders explicitly opts for an effective agricultural policy and the right to food security in Malawi. With this project, the government is releasing 5,500,000 euros to support around 300,000 families in rural areas of Malawi to evolve from a survival agriculture to a market-oriented agriculture.
The project focuses on four components:
- Sustainable agriculture and diversification of food production
- Rehabilitation of secondary roads to provide access to productive agricultural areas and facilitate market access.
- Institutional capacity building of the Ministry of Agriculture
- Coordination and consistency of the project activities of the different ministries and departments responsible for the implementation of the project
In 2011, the Government of Malawi launched the Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) to give direction to all sectors in the agricultural sector. Like the first project, funding for this follow-up project (ASWAp II) is channelled through the Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) under the supervision of the World Bank.
Video on the results of the project in 2020: The video shows how building and repairing roads offers new opportunities for farmers. It gives farmers access to markets to sell their products.
