Germany has the largest population and strongest economy in Europe. Germany is Flanders most important trade partner – annual Flemish exports to Germany amount to more than 50 billion euros. This is equivalent to more than 20% of the total Flemish GDP. One third of Flemish exports to Germany is destined for North Rhine-Westphalia, a region that is also known as the Ruhr. The Government of Flanders therefore maintains intense relations with the federal government there. There is also frequent contact with a number of other federated states, as e.g. Saxony and Bavaria.
In addition to a General Representation of the Government of Flanders in Berlin, Flanders has a number of economic representatives in different parts of the country. Flanders plays an active role in the cultural scene in Germany. Along with Netherlands, it was Guest of Honour in 2016 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, one of the largest cultural events in Europe.
