From 1924 to 1962, Burundi and the neighbouring country of Rwanda were mandate territories, before later being a trust territory of Belgium. This is why there is a considerable Burundi community in our country, especially in Brussels. The Government of Flanders has little institutional cooperation with Burundi as they opted to geographically concentrate their development cooperation in Southern Africa. Nevertheless, Flemish universities are active in Burundi through funding from within the federal development cooperation.
